Platinized Anodes (Pt. Anode) are produced by plating platinum (Pt.) on a specially treated precious metal (Titanium / Niobium / Tantalum) substrate by means of electrodeposition process. They are economical as well as it retains the superior physical and chemical properties of platinum. It is the most effective metal for any electrolysis process due to its current conducting property.

Uses of electrolysis:

Electrolysis is used extensively in metallurgical processes, such as in extraction (electrowinning) or purification (electrorefining) of metals from ores or compounds and in deposition of metals from solution (electroplating).

Electrolysis is used in the extraction of metals from their ores. For example, when a current is passed through molten sodium chloride, sodium is deposited at the cathode and chlorine gas is evolved at the anode. Aluminium and potassium are also extracted by electrolysis.

 It is used for refining certain metals such as copper and zinc.

Electrolysis is used for the manufacture of chlorine. In submarines, oxygen produced by the electrolysis of water is used for breathing.

The change from lead anodes to platinized titanium anodes was encouraged by the introduction of high efficiency fluoride-free baths, which attacked lead anodes more severely than traditional hard chrome plating chemistries. Originally lead anodes were replaced with titanium anodes that had a copper or aluminum core for high current applications, and over time the extra benefits of platinized titanium anodes were recognized.

Our Titanium Mesh Anodes are low energy mesh materials to replace conventional cast or cold rolled lead anodes. The lead anodes pose a challenge for EW operations in handling and disposing of lead waste. This source of free fluorides attacks titanium substrate anodes rapidly. The effective life of a platinum niobium anode is always much longer and more predictable than that of titanium substrate anodes.

In organic and inorganic chemical industry platinum is widely used as the anode and Cathode in a number of electrochemical processes. Platinum is preferred on an anode's outer surface because it is highly resistant to corrosion and can ensure current flow in most electrolyte media without leading to the formation of an insulating layer on itself. Because it doesn’t corrode, it doesn’t produce corrosion products and hence the consumption rate is extremely low.

Platinum being the most costly material logical utilization of Platinum for the greater value ensures economical solution. What is the role of Platinum Anodes in Electrolytic Production of Chemical?

It is necessary to use an inert electrode, such as platinum, because there is no metal present to conduct the electrons from the anode (Positive Electrodes) to the cathode (Negative Electrodes). Oxidation occurs at the anode (Platinum Plated Anode) and reduction at the cathode (Titanium Cathode). The behaviour of platinized titanium ‘slave’ or ‘auxiliary’ anodes in electroplating is described, with particular reference to use in the plating of gold, rhodium, nickel, copper, tin and chromium. Preceding this survey some characteristics of commercially available platinized titanium are considered, including method of preparation, overvoltage, composition and platinum thickness. The results of accelerated laboratory tests to define limiting conditions of use are given, and durability is contrasted with that of alternative experimental noble-metal-coated refractory metals. Degradation of anode surfaces encountered in some practical applications is attributed to platinum dissolution resulting from reaction with particular organic additives, but in some circumstances an undermining of the coating as a result of superficial dissolution of the titanium may occur.

Platinised titanium anodes were the first coated electrodes to be marketed, and in many applications they have been displaced by dimensionally stable oxide coatings that have been highly optimised for the particular electrolyte. However, there remains a market for anodes which can be used in relatively small scale processes and this could be met by high performance, platinised titanium anodes. Indeed, the number of such applications in electrosynthesis and environmental processing is expanding. It may be timely, therefore, to re-examine the manufacture and performance of platinised titanium anodes and to consider using platinum alloys for nonspecific applications; for example, platinum/iridium coatings on titanium are known to have superior properties in some applications.
