Platinum is an extremely rare and expensive material, even more expensive than gold. However, platinum is an exceptionally smooth-surfaced and durable material that protects against corrosion.

How does plating on semiconductors using Platinised Anodes?

          The plating metal is connected to the positively charged electrode of an electrical circuit. This electrode is called the anode. (Platinum Plated Titanium Anode)

          The work part is placed at the negatively charged electrode, called the cathode.

          Both the plating metal and the substrate are immersed in an electrolytic solution called a bath.

          After submersion, a DC current is supplied to the anode (Platinum Plated Titanium Anode). Oxidizing the atoms of the plating metal and dissolving them into the bath. At the cathode, the negative charge reduces the atoms, causing them to plate the substrate.

This general process defines most electroplating. However, semiconductor electroplating is much smaller in scale than the average electroplating processes. The chips in question are often less than an inch in diameter, and the circuits inside them consist of miniscule wires. Any errors, such as breakage or the addition of dust particles to the semiconductor, can result in a defective product. As a result, semiconductor electroplating involves a few extra precautions and considerations in order to ensure the quality of the finished product.

Platinized titanium anodes consist of a titanium base, in the form of either expanded mesh, sheet, rod, wire or tube. The plating of platinum between 2 to 10 microns thick and purity of platinum is 99.99%. They possess the electrochemical properties of platinum. The titanium used is 99.9% pure as established by ASTM (American Society of Metal).

Configuration of Anode and Cathode:-

Generally, the gold plating is connected to the anode (Platinum Plated Titanium Anode or +ve charged electrode) of the circuit. The jewellery is kept at the cathode (-ve charged electrode).

Both are kept immersed in a highly developed electrolytic bath solution. At this stage, a DC current is supplied to the anode that oxidizes the gold atoms and dissolves them into the solution. The dissolved ions of gold are reduced at the cathode and plated on the jewellery.

The behaviour of platinized titanium ‘slave’ or ‘auxiliary’ anodes in electroplating is described, with particular reference to use in the plating of gold, rhodium, nickel, copper, tin and chromium. Preceding this survey some characteristics of commercially available platinized titanium are considered, including method of preparation, overvoltage, composition and platinum thickness. The results of accelerated laboratory tests to define limiting conditions of use are given, and durability is contrasted with that of alternative experimental noble-metal-coated refractory metals. Degradation of anode surfaces encountered in some practical applications is attributed to platinum dissolution resulting from reaction with particular organic additives, but in some circumstances an undermining of the coating as a result of superficial dissolution of the titanium may occur.

Platinised titanium anodes were the first coated electrodes to be marketed, and in many applications they have been displaced by dimensionally stable oxide coatings that have been highly optimised for the particular electrolyte. However, there remains a market for anodes which can be used in relatively small scale processes and this could be met by high performance, platinised titanium anodes. Indeed, the number of such applications in electrosynthesis and environmental processing is expanding. It may be timely, therefore, to re-examine the manufacture and performance of platinised titanium anodes and to consider using platinum alloys for nonspecific applications; for example, platinum/iridium coatings on titanium are known to have superior properties in some applications.
