Tiaano Platinised Titanium Anode for Hard Chrome Plating. Current hard chromium plating processes are principally based on chromic acid and sulfuric acid. The nature of chrome electroplating bath can impact the longevity of the anodes. In particular, free fluoride ions; it can attack the metals of the anode and cause corrosion. 

Lead tin alloy anodes are commonly used for hard chrome plating. But the sludge of lead chromate is usually formed on the bottom of the plating tank. As a soft metal, lead alloy anode is easily deform or bend. It affects the current density and result in uneven plating thickness and may cause short circuit.

Platinized titanium anode is a good option in hard chrome plating. It reduces the amount of hazardous lead sludge generation, is dimensional stability, resulting in a more stable, homogeneous, and consistent-thickness plating process. Platinized anodes are much more flexible in shaping and dimensioning and can be designed according to the shapes of the work pieces to be plated.

Tiaano employs titanium tube as substrate, since it produces uniform current density and excellent plating results. It also enables gases to escape more effectively and increase the movement of the electrolyte. Also give a higher coating current density and smaller distances between the anode and the cathode.

For Plating, Tiaano has designed a high-temperature electrolysis method for platinum plating. The purity of the plating is at 99.99 percent. The ductility, adhesion and corrosion resistance of the platinum plating are considerably better, while the internal stresses are kept to a minimum. The plating or coating thickness distribution is much more uniform, because of the dimensional stability of the anodes.

Platinum Plated Niobium Anode (Replating on Niobium Substrate)

The Niobium is the anode electrode made of Niobium which is having the coating or Plating of platinum. Platinum is used on the surface as a primary anode material due to its excellent corrosion resistance under anodic conditions coupled with its ability to pass current in all electrolytes. The corrosion resistance of platinum manifests itself in its low consumption rate. Its major disadvantage is its high cost, thus making it clear that it is most desirable to use as little platinum as is necessary. In order to restrict the amount of platinum used and to maintain an anode of some structural integrity, it is necessary to use some type of substrate material.

Both titanium and niobium have the ability to withstand anodic conditions, and both possess unique advantages and disadvantages as a substrate for platinum.

The major advantage of titanium is its low cost, particularly when considering its lower density. A disadvantage of titanium is its poor conductivity; approximately 5 times less than niobium and 50 times less than copper. Low conductivity makes titanium poorly suited for long wire lengths and restricts its use to larger diameter, shorter anodes.

The use of niobium as a substrate to platinum eliminates many of the problems with titanium. Although its conductivity is higher than that of titanium, it is often still too low for use in small diameters and long lengths. The principal advantage of niobium is its relatively high voltage potential.

The change from lead anodes to platinized titanium anodes was encouraged by the introduction of high efficiency fluoride-free baths, which attacked lead anodes more severely than traditional hard chrome plating chemistries. Originally lead anodes were replaced with titanium anodes that had a copper or aluminum core for high current applications, and over time the extra benefits of platinized titanium anodes were recognized.

Why Pt Titanium is the best alternative to lead anodes:-

Our Titanium Mesh Anodes are low energy mesh materials to replace conventional cast or cold rolled lead anodes. The lead anodes pose a challenge for EW operations in handling and disposing of lead waste. The niobium substrate is decidedly more tolerant of free fluorides formed at the anode. Plating baths utilize an ammonium fluoride as an additive. This source of free fluorides attacks titanium substrate anodes rapidly. The effective life of a platinum niobium anode is always much longer and more predictable than that of titanium substrate anodes.

Tiaano Platinised Titanium Anodes are most suitable for electro plating (Metal Finishing). The behaviour of platinized titanium ‘slave’ or ‘auxiliary’ anodes in electroplating is described, with particular reference to use in the plating of gold, rhodium, nickel, copper, tin and chromium. Preceding this survey some characteristics of commercially available platinized titanium are considered, including method of preparation, overvoltage, composition and platinum thickness. The results of accelerated laboratory tests to define limiting conditions of use are given, and durability is contrasted with that of alternative experimental noble-metal-coated refractory metals. Degradation of anode surfaces encountered in some practical applications is attributed to platinum dissolution resulting from reaction with particular organic additives, but in some circumstances an undermining of the coating as a result of superficial dissolution of the titanium may occur.

Platinised titanium anodes were the first coated electrodes to be marketed, and in many applications they have been displaced by dimensionally stable oxide coatings that have been highly optimised for the particular electrolyte. However, there remains a market for anodes which can be used in relatively small scale processes and this could be met by high performance, platinised titanium anodes. Indeed, the number of such applications in electrosynthesis and environmental processing is expanding. It may be timely, therefore, to re-examine the manufacture and performance of platinised titanium anodes and to consider using platinum alloys for nonspecific applications; for example, platinum/iridium coatings on titanium are known to have superior properties in some applications.
