Platinised titanium anodes consist of a titanium base, in the form of either expanded mesh, sheet, rod, wire or tube with a plating of platinum between 2 to 5 microns thick and purity of platinum is 99.99%. They possess the electrochemical properties of platinum. The titanium used is 99.9% pure as established by ASTM (American Society of Metal).

The service time of the platinised titanium anodes depends on the chemical resistivity of the base metal, the dissolution rate of the deposited platinum in the electrolyte, which in turn depends upon layer morphology, and adhesive qualities, pH, current density and current ripple.For most applications the dissolution rate is low and the advantages of platinised titanium anodes are far greater than any metal loss.

Platinum is widely used as electrodes in metal finishing industries, having special chemical & physical properties like high corrosion resistance, thermal conductivity and catalytic nature. Platinum is conductive, chemically stable and highly resistant to oxidation and corrosion. It has a silvery-gray color and can be polished to a variety of finishes. Due to its high cost, Platinum is made practical for use by electroplating a thin layer over a high corrosion resistance substrate.

Since Titanium, Niobium and Tantalum substrates are having the ability to form an insulating oxide film under anodic conditions, they are all most commonly used as anode in ICCP. Among them, Titanium is less expensive; however, it has a much lower breakdown potential than Niobium or Tantalum. The titanium oxide breaks down at anodic potentials in the 12 V range.
