Anode Side: Platinum Plated Titanium Anode

Tiaano Electro Plating Anodes consist of a titanium or Niobium based material in the form of expanded meshl, sheet, rod, wire, or pipe. The standard platinum layer thickness is 1.5 micron to 5 micron in case of higher loads layer thickness of up to 20 micron. The lifetime of platinised titanium anodes is in particular dependent on the work medium (electrolyte) and the anodic current (specific current density).

It should not exceed 75 A/dm2. The platinum wear is low under these conditions and the lifetime of the anode is calculable. According to experience, it is approx. 1-4 g platinum per one million ampere hours in fluoride-free chromium baths. In case of specific current densities of over 75 A/dm2 or upon the use of baths containing fluoride, we recommend the use of platinised niobium anodes.

Platinised titanium anodes combine the excellent electrochemical characteristics of platinum with the good corrosion qualities of titanium. They are characterized by the following features and provide more advantages.

Easier handling and recoating possibilities, optimizing plating quality, light weight. Furthermore, they can be easily removed and / or replaced whenever necessary. This often allows a re-use of expensive anode materials and designs, and reduces operational costs.

How does Electroplating (Gold Plating) Work?

In this instance, a layer of gold is to be electrodeposited on metallic jewelry to enhance its appearance.

Usually, the gold plating is connected to the anode (+ve / positive charged electrode) of the circuit and the jewellery is kept at the cathode (-ve / Negative charged electrode). Both are kept immersed in a highly developed electrolytic solution. At this stage, a DC current is supplied to the anode that oxidizes the gold atoms and dissolves them into the solution. The dissolved ions of gold are reduced at the cathode and plated on the jewelry.

Simple concept of the Electro Plating: - Direct current is supplied to the anode, oxidizing its metal atoms and dissolving them in the electrolyte solution. The dissolved metal ions are reduced at the cathode, plating the metal onto the item. The current through the circuit is such that the rate at which the anode is dissolved is equal to the rate at which the cathode is plated.

The service life of platinised titanium depends on both the electrolyte matrix and the applied current density. Therefore, in fluoride containing baths and at current densities >75 A/dm2 platinized niobium is recommended in preference to platinised titanium.

Platinized titanium and niobium anodes are completely or partially covered with a fee microns of platinum (usually 2.5 micron). Where the platinum is consumed after years of use, the underlying titanium or niobium passivates and the bath voltage rises at constant current operation. The base metals are not attacked at the usual operational voltages, in fluoride free chromium baths.

 

For most applications the platinum wear rate is very low and the corresponding anode life time high. In sulphuric acid chromium baths the platinum consumption is between 1g and 4g platinum per million amp hours. Careful design of the platinised anodes will increase their benefit and maximise their life span.

Tiaano Customized Platinum plated Anodes or Electrodes are manufactured using the metal of titanium, niobium, tantalum in the production and Pure Platinum Coating. The electrocatalytic functional layers of platinum are used throughout virtually the entire electrochemical industry.

Platinised titanium anodes can only be used successfully in electrolytes which do not attack the titanium base. This excludes use at very low and very high pH values and also Chromium baths containing fluorides.

The service time of the platinised titanium anodes depends on the chemical resistivity of the base metal, the dissolution rate of the deposited platinum in the electrolyte, which in turn depends upon layer morphology, and adhesive qualities, pH, current density and current ripple.

For most applications the dissolution rate is low and the advantages of platinised titanium anodes are far greater than any metal loss. For fluoride-free chromium baths, the platinum consumption will be approximately 1 to 4 g of platinum per million Ah.
